I will preface this list of sound excerpts and tracks with the following;

I am a cinema lover before being a musician. One of my favourite things to do (most times accidentally) is to “listen” to movies, forgetting to watch, when having some in the background. Footsteps, silence, clothes rubbing, breathing, hair being brushed, panting, very soft voices, non-sense dialogues, wind, a distant dog barking, a car passing by…

I like to imagine another story maybe, one with no precise aim.

In this mix i use and reuse bits of tracks, in the beginning, at the end, as to create a link, a perfect loop if we were to play this mix on loop. I spread all over it various, carefully picked excerpts of films and a series, linking them. This other story re-imagined.

Heat is a masterpiece of a film and soundtrack. I can’t believe I hadn’t watched it earlier in my life. My friends and I went to watch it on 35mm film in LA at the Vista theatre. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better setting. The only way to experience this movie ; you get out of the theatre, drive home, watch the city, it’s all around you, sparkling, buzzing, downtown peaks through the trees…

Great interiors but a very “whatever” movie that doesn’t quite do justice to the book. That being said, it has that LA roaming around feeling ; teenagers are bored, hang out at each other’s places, fuck, do drugs, repeat.. The city is so magnetic and nothing that can be properly grasped.

But the star of the show is obviously yet another great soundtrack by Thomas Newman, one of the absolute best composers there is, who honestly gives its soul to the film.

Maps To The Stars c’est ça.

I will most likely repeat myself, but it felt important to have a red thread running along this mix, to truly capture some kind of mystical vibe that is found in Los Angeles particularly. Its shine, its absurdity, vapidness at times, its ethereality, something you can’t have no matter how close you get.

“Maps To The Stars” is all that.

I have selected various sound excerpts throughout this mix, from the main character arriving in town, to one’s light psychosis, car sex, repeated scenes and sentences by various characters creating echoes and blurred realities. And i adore Mia Wasikowska’s voice.

Cette phrase y figure :“Are you allergic to the 20th century?”.

This last part has a lot of sound excerpts from the films I have mentioned above, but I will focus on the mini series “Too Old To Die Young”. I am a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn’s cinematography and how he tells a story or a scene in “simple” and smart ways, showing little, his long-shots, colourful lighting. In this series, there isn’t a “good guy”, everyone is heavily flawed. It’s so manly and everyone is despicable. A woman rises as our sole, ‑yet again, flawed- hero (if we have to have a hero, and maybe here lies that question).

I adore some of the conversations the characters have that seem so… absurd and strange, similarly to in “Maps To The Stars”, or some testimonies in “Safe” as well.
